God who left mathematicians in charge of naming math shit?

In linear algebra, which is like algebra with lines on graphs, one of the standards is that when you're talking about a normalized vector (aka a line with a length of 1) it's notated with a lil ^ over it. So for instance, i becomes î. This is literally read as i-hat Because it Looks like it has A Hat.

holy shit math is actually really fun when you’re using it to solve real problems instead of just solving pages of equations.

for the last couple days, i’ve been engrossed in solving a bunch of matrix equations to make one of my comp sci assignments run faster and hoo boy this is something i never knew i needed.

i woke up today and chose to do math instead of play factorio space age (which i’ve been looking forward to for months, and just released yesterday!), and if you know me you know just how monumental of a bar that is to clear.

it’s insane that programming classes are the only ones with weeklong projects (e.g. large open ended problems that require creative thinking and problem solving) when it fits math classes so well too, i feel like so much of math is knowing when and how to actually apply these concepts, not just how they work, and that’s completely absent from all math education i’ve been through.

I think the higher in math you get the more prone you are to forgetting basic things. This one kid in my linear algebra class spent half the time trying to prove to me why 16 minus 9 does NOT equal 7.

Isn't it neat that every n-dimensional vector space over k is isomorphic to kⁿ? Like I didn't really appreciate that fact when I took linear algebra in first year but with hindsight that's the whole reason why linear algebra is so powerul

Was truly goofy of my high school algebra II teacher to take one look at that depressed 16-year-old student in her class and think, “ah yes, handing that child a list of vector space axioms will fix her…”
